Product Description

Care Plus Surgical Spirit Liquid 200ml

Care Plus Surgical Spirit Liquid 200ml is a versatile antiseptic and disinfectant solution essential for both first aid kits and household maintenance. Primarily used for skin preparation before injections or minor procedures, this care surgical formula works effectively to cleanse the skin and prevent infection. This spirit liquid is also widely used for its astringent properties, helping to toughen the skin on the feet to prevent blisters—a common practice among hikers and athletes.

If you are wondering what is surgical spirit used for, its applications extend far beyond personal care. As a high-strength surgical spirit cleaner, it is excellent for sterilising small medical tools, glass surfaces, and electronics, leaving no residue behind. Care 200ml surgical spirit is a staple in many professional environments due to its rapid drying time and powerful antimicrobial action. Whether you are using care+ surgical spirit 200ml for skin disinfection or as a topical application to treat bedsores, it remains one of the most reliable surgical spirits available for everyday functional use.

Key Features:

  • Dual-Action Antiseptic: Effectively cleanses the skin and kills bacteria on contact.
  • Versatile Sterilisation: Works as a powerful surgical spirit cleaner for surfaces and equipment.
  • Skin Protection: Helps to toughen hard skin on the feet to prevent friction-related injuries.
  • Multi-Purpose Utility: Suitable for home, clinical, and industrial cleaning tasks.
  • Astringent Properties: Acts as a topical application to help dry out and disinfect minor skin irritations.
  • Convenient Size: Available in a manageable care 200ml surgical spirit bottle for easy storage.

How Care Surgical Spirit Works

Surgical spirit is an alcohol-based skin liquid. The industrial methylated spirit base evaporates quickly once applied, and the surface of the skin feels firmer as it dries. This is why it has traditionally been used on pressure areas and on the feet. Methyl salicylate is included as an active ingredient. Castor oil is included to help reduce the dryness and cracking that alcohol alone can cause.

Because the alcohol content is high, frequent use can leave skin irritated or dry. It should only be used on skin that is intact.

Ingredients

  • Active ingredients: Castor oil 2.5% v/v, methyl salicylate 0.5% v/v
  • Other ingredients: Industrial methylated spirit, diethyl phthalate

Do not use this product if you are allergic to methyl salicylate, castor oil or any of the other ingredients.

How to Use

  1. Check the skin is intact. Do not apply to broken, cut, scratched or damaged skin.
  2. Pour a small amount onto a piece of cotton wool.
  3. Apply to the affected area of skin as required.
  4. Allow the area to dry fully before dressing or covering it.
  5. Close the bottle tightly after use and store it below 25°C, away from naked flames and heat.

For external use only. Keep away from the eyes, the mouth and other mucous membranes. If swallowed accidentally, go to hospital immediately and take the container with you, even if you feel well. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Before you use it: Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you are pregnant, may be pregnant or are breastfeeding. If you take warfarin or another anticoagulant, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using it, as topical salicylates can increase the effect of warfarin. If your skin worsens or does not improve, stop using it and seek advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is surgical spirit used for?

Care Surgical Spirit BP is licensed to help prevent bed sores and to harden the skin of the feet. It is applied to intact skin with cotton wool. It is for external use only and is not licensed for any other purpose.

2. Is surgical spirit the same as isopropyl alcohol or methylated spirits?

No. Surgical spirit is based on industrial methylated spirit, which is ethanol-based, not isopropyl alcohol. It also contains castor oil, methyl salicylate and diethyl phthalate. This makes it a different product from household methylated spirits and from isopropyl alcohol, so they should not be swapped for one another. Always use the product that matches the purpose on its label.

3. Can I use surgical spirit on an open wound?

No. The label says not to apply it to broken skin, and it can cause a burning sensation on damaged skin. If you have an open wound, ask a pharmacist or your GP which product is suitable.

4. Can I use surgical spirit on a piercing?

Care Surgical Spirit is not licensed for piercing aftercare. A new piercing is an open wound, and this product should not be used on broken skin. Follow the aftercare advice from your piercer, or ask a pharmacist.

5. Is surgical spirit safe near a flame, and how should I store it?

No. It is flammable, so keep it away from naked flames, heat and anything that could ignite it, including cigarettes. Keep the bottle tightly closed, store it below 25°C and keep it out of the sight and reach of children.

6. Can I buy surgical spirit in the UK, and who should avoid it?

Yes. Surgical Spirit BP is a General Sales List medicine, so it is available in pharmacies without a prescription. Avoid it if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you take warfarin or another anticoagulant.
