Product Description

Blepha EyeBag 200 Uses | Best Heated Eye Mask For Blepharitis

Blepha EyeBag is a reusable, microwaveable heated eye mask designed to relieve the symptoms of dry eye linked to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), including blepharitis, stye and chalazion. Warmth from the mask softens the oily secretions in the eyelids so they can spread across the surface of the eye, which helps reduce tear evaporation. It is filled with untreated flax seeds, covered in silk and cotton, and can be reheated about 200 times.

The mask is heated in a microwave, then placed over closed eyes for 5 to 10 minutes. For the first two weeks it is used twice a day, in the morning and evening, then as advised by your optician or healthcare professional. Check the temperature on your wrist before every use, and do not use it on broken or bleeding skin around the eyes. If you have eye pain, a change in your vision or very red eyes, stop and seek advice.

Key Features

  • Reusable heated eye mask for dry eye linked to MGD, blepharitis, stye and chalazion
  • Can be reheated about 200 times, with a recommended replacement after roughly 6 months of regular use
  • Filled with untreated flax seeds, with silver silk on one side and black cotton moleskin on the other
  • No plastic and no added fragrance
  • Designed for microwave heating, with separate times for first use and later uses
  • Used for 5 to 10 minutes over closed eyes, either side up
  • Can ease discomfort for contact lens wearers with dry eye
  • Suitable for adults, including during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and for children aged 3 and over when an adult heats and handles it

How Blepha EyeBag Works

The meibomian glands along the eyelid edges produce an oily layer that stops tears from evaporating too quickly. When the oil thickens or the glands become blocked, the eyes can feel dry, gritty, sore or tired. The warmth of the EyeBag melts and softens the oils so they can flow and spread across the eye surface.

The flax seeds hold and release heat evenly, and the soft, contoured fit keeps the warmth in contact with the closed eyelids. A study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology (Bilkhu et al., 2014) reported relief from this type of dry eye. Blepha EyeBag does not cure blepharitis or MGD, which are often long-term conditions, but it can be part of a daily eyelid care routine.

Materials and Care

Materials: Untreated flax seeds (linseed), silver silk on one side and black 100% cotton moleskin on the other. No plastic and no added fragrance.

Heating:

  • First use: heat on full power for 1 minute on a clean, dry microwaveable plate, then let it cool completely.
  • Later uses: heat for 40 seconds in a microwave of 750W or below, or 30 seconds in a microwave above 750W. Reduce the time for microwaves over 1000W.
  • Only reheat from room temperature. Never reheat a mask that is already hot.
  • Stay by the microwave while it heats. Do not use a metal griddle.

Care: Do not use wet wipes on the mask. Surface marks after use are normal. Keep it in its box when not in use. Replace it after about 200 reheats, or after roughly 6 months of regular use.

How to Use

  1. Remove contact lenses, glasses and eye make-up. Wash your hands, face and eyelids.
  2. Heat the mask as described above.
  3. Shake it to spread the seeds and the heat.
  4. Test the temperature on the silk side against your wrist. It should feel comfortably warm, not hot.
  5. Lie back and place it over closed eyes for 5 to 10 minutes. Either side can be used.
  6. Afterwards, massage your closed eyelids gently for about 30 seconds.
  7. Cleanse the eyelids with a lid cleansing product if you use one.
  8. Return the mask to its box.

How often: Use it twice a day, morning and evening, for 5 to 10 minutes each time for the first two weeks. After that, follow the advice of your optician or healthcare professional.

Warnings: Do not use it if the skin around your eyes is broken or bleeding. Avoid it if you know you are allergic to flax or linseed, which is very rare. Stop using it if eye irritation or itchiness increases. Mild redness after use is normal. Keep washing powders and detergents away from the eyelid skin, as they can cause dermatitis. If you have eye pain, a change in vision, or very red eyes, seek advice from an optician, GP or NHS 111.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a Blepha EyeBag, and what is it used for?

Blepha EyeBag is a reusable heated eye mask, formerly sold as the MGDRx EyeBag. It is used to relieve dry eye symptoms linked to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, and for related eyelid problems such as blepharitis, stye and chalazion. It can also help ease discomfort for contact lens wearers with dry eye.

2. How do I use a Blepha EyeBag?

Heat it in a microwave using the times above, shake it, and test it against your wrist. Lie back with it over closed eyes for 5 to 10 minutes, then gently massage your eyelids for about 30 seconds. Remove contact lenses and make-up first, and always check it is comfortably warm, not hot.

3. How often should I use a Blepha EyeBag, and does it work?

For the first two weeks use it twice a day, morning and evening. After that, follow your optician’s or healthcare professional’s advice. A 2014 study in the British Journal of Ophthalmology reported relief from this type of dry eye, but results vary and it is not a cure.

4. Can I use a Blepha EyeBag without a microwave, and how many uses does it have?

It is designed to be heated in a microwave, so follow the heating instructions in the pack. Do not use a metal griddle. It can be reheated about 200 times, and the manufacturer suggests replacing it after roughly 6 months of regular use.

5. What are the symptoms of blepharitis, and can a heated eye mask help?

Blepharitis can cause sore, itchy or red eyelids, a gritty feeling in the eyes, flakes or crusts at the base of the lashes, and eyelids that stick together on waking. Warming the eyelids is part of a daily routine of warmth, gentle massage and lid cleaning. If symptoms do not improve, see your optician or GP.

6. Who should not use it, and what are the precautions?

Do not use it on broken or bleeding skin around the eyes, or if you are allergic to flax or linseed. Stop using it if irritation increases. Children aged 3 and over can use it only if an adult heats and handles it. Seek advice for eye pain, vision changes or very red eyes.
