Product Description

Acidex Advance Oral Suspension Aniseed Flavour 250ml & 500ml | Heartburn And Indigestion Suspension

Acidex Advance Oral Suspension is a reflux suppressant used to relieve and prevent the symptoms of heartburn and acid indigestion. It combines sodium alginate with potassium hydrogen carbonate, which together form a protective raft-like layer over the top of the stomach contents, physically keeping stomach acid away from the lining of the food pipe rather than reducing acid production itself.

Because it works by forming a physical barrier rather than being absorbed into the bloodstream, Acidex Advance is suitable for a wider range of situations than some other heartburn treatments, including during pregnancy, for hiatus hernia symptoms, and for heartburn that flares up when starting or stopping acid-reducing medicines like PPIs or H2 antagonists. The aniseed flavour and smooth suspension format also make it a straightforward option for anyone who finds tablets harder to take.

Key Features:

  • Physical barrier action. Sodium alginate and potassium hydrogen carbonate form a protective raft over the stomach contents rather than working systemically.
  • Broad suitability. Can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, where treatment duration should be kept as short as possible.
  • Targets multiple reflux-related symptoms. Suitable for heartburn, acid indigestion, hiatus hernia symptoms, and reflux-related hoarseness, sore throat or cough.
  • Available in 250ml and 500ml. Lets you choose the size that matches how often you expect to need it.
  • Aniseed flavoured suspension. An easy-to-take liquid format for anyone who prefers it to tablets.

How Acidex Advance Works

Acidex Advance works through a physical mechanism rather than by altering how much acid the stomach produces.

When swallowed, the sodium alginate reacts with stomach acid to form a gel, which traps tiny bubbles of carbon dioxide released by the potassium hydrogen carbonate. This creates a foamy, raft-like layer that floats on top of the stomach contents, sitting above the acid and food. Because this raft stays near the top of the stomach, it forms a physical barrier that keeps acid away from the oesophagus if reflux occurs, relieving and helping prevent the burning sensation of heartburn.

This is different from antacids that simply neutralise acid already present, or acid reducers like PPIs that lower how much acid the stomach makes. Acidex Advance's physical raft action is also why it doesn't depend on being absorbed into the body to work, which is part of why it's considered suitable for use during pregnancy when clinically needed.

Ingredients:

  • Active ingredients: Sodium alginate 1000mg/10ml, Potassium hydrogen carbonate 200mg/10ml
  • Other ingredients: Calcium carbonate, carbomer, sodium hydroxide, saccharin sodium, ethyl parahydroxybenzoate (E214), propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), butyl parahydroxybenzoate, isopropyl alcohol, star anise oil, purified water
  • Contains parahydroxybenzoates (parabens, E214 and E216), which may rarely cause allergic reactions, sometimes delayed.

How to Use:

    1. Shake the bottle well before use.
    2. Adults, the elderly and children 12 years and over: take 5 to 10ml (one to two 5ml spoonfuls) after meals and at bedtime.
    3. Children under 12: should only be given this product on medical advice.
    4. Do not exceed the stated dose.
    5. If symptoms persist after 7 days, stop use and consult your doctor.
    6. If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
    7. If taking other medicines, especially tetracyclines, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, iron salts, thyroid hormones, chloroquine, bisphosphonates or estramustine, leave at least 2 hours between taking those and taking Acidex Advance.
    8. Store below 25°C. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Use within 3 months of opening.

Not suitable for: anyone allergic to any of the ingredients, including parahydroxybenzoates (parabens). Each 10ml dose contains around 5.1mmol sodium and 2mmol potassium, so anyone on a sodium or potassium-restricted diet, or with significant kidney or heart disease, should check with a doctor or pharmacist before regular or prolonged use.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    1. What is Acidex Advance Oral Suspension used for?

Acidex Advance is used to relieve and prevent the symptoms of heartburn and acid indigestion, including reflux linked to hiatus hernia, reflux oesophagitis, and hoarseness, sore throat or cough caused by acid reflux. It can also help manage heartburn that occurs when starting or coming off acid-reducing medicines such as PPIs.

    2. Is Acidex Advance the same as Gaviscon?

No, though they work in a similar way. Both are reflux suppressant suspensions that form a protective raft over the stomach contents, but Acidex Advance and Gaviscon are different branded products with their own specific formulations. Which one suits you best often comes down to personal preference, tolerance, or what your pharmacist recommends for your particular symptoms.

    3. Can you take Acidex Advance over the counter, or does it need a prescription?

Acidex Advance is available without a prescription. That said, it's still worth using it carefully to get the best results, and you should see a doctor if your symptoms get worse or don't improve within 7 days of starting treatment.

    4. What are the possible side effects of taking Acidex Advance?

Side effects are uncommon. The most commonly reported are diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. Very rarely, an allergic reaction can occur, with symptoms such as difficulty breathing, hives or facial swelling. If you notice any of these, stop taking the product and speak to your doctor straight away.

    5. Can you take Acidex Advance while pregnant?

Yes, Acidex Advance can be used during pregnancy and while breastfeeding if clinically needed. Because it works physically rather than being absorbed into the body, it's considered suitable in these circumstances, though it's recommended to keep the length of treatment as short as possible and to check with your doctor or midwife if you're unsure.

    6. How does Acidex Advance compare to a standard antacid?

Acidex Advance works differently to a typical antacid. Antacids neutralise acid that's already present in the stomach, while Acidex Advance forms a physical raft that sits above the stomach contents and keeps acid away from the food pipe. This raft-forming action is part of why it can help with symptoms that a simple antacid might not fully address, such as reflux-related hoarseness or cough.
