Product Description

Acidex Advance Oral Suspension Peppermint Flavour 250ml & 500ml | Heartburn And Indigestion Suspension

Acidex Advance Oral Suspension in Peppermint flavour is a raft-forming reflux suppressant that relieves and helps prevent heartburn and acid indigestion. Its two active ingredients, sodium alginate and potassium hydrogen carbonate, combine to form a protective layer over the stomach contents, keeping acid away from the food pipe rather than simply neutralising it after the fact.

This peppermint variant gives the same formulation and dosing as Acidex Advance's Aniseed flavour, so the choice between the two comes down entirely to taste preference. It suits anyone who prefers a cooling, minty finish to their medicine over an aniseed one, and like the rest of the Acidex Advance range, it's suitable for a broad range of reflux-related symptoms, including use during pregnancy.

Key Features:

  • Forms a protective raft, not just an antacid reaction. Sodium alginate and potassium hydrogen carbonate combine to physically block acid from reaching the food pipe.
  • Suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Treatment duration should still be kept as short as practical.
  • Addresses a range of reflux symptoms. Covers heartburn, acid indigestion, hiatus hernia symptoms, and reflux-related hoarseness, sore throat or cough.
  • Peppermint flavoured suspension. A cooling alternative to the Aniseed flavour, with identical actives and dosing.
  • Available in 250ml and 500ml. Choose the size that suits how regularly you expect to use it.

How Acidex Advance Works

Acidex Advance doesn't work by reducing how much acid the stomach produces, it works by physically keeping that acid where it belongs.

Once swallowed, the sodium alginate reacts with stomach acid to form a gel. The potassium hydrogen carbonate releases small bubbles of carbon dioxide within that gel, turning it into a light, foamy raft that floats on top of the stomach's contents. Sitting above the acid and food, this raft acts as a barrier, so if reflux happens, the raft reaches the food pipe first rather than the acid itself, relieving and helping prevent the burning sensation of heartburn.

Because the mechanism is physical rather than systemic, the medicine doesn't need to be absorbed into the bloodstream to take effect, which is also why it's considered suitable for use during pregnancy where clinically needed.

Ingredients

  • Active ingredients: Sodium alginate 1000mg/10ml, Potassium hydrogen carbonate 200mg/10ml
  • Other ingredients: Calcium carbonate, carbomer, sodium hydroxide, saccharin sodium, ethyl parahydroxybenzoate (E214), propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), butyl parahydroxybenzoate, isopropyl alcohol, peppermint oil, purified water
  • Contains parahydroxybenzoates (parabens, E214 and E216), which may rarely cause allergic reactions, sometimes delayed

How to Use

  1. Shake the bottle well before use.
  2. Adults, the elderly and children 12 years and over: take 5 to 10ml (one to two 5ml spoonfuls) after meals and at bedtime.
  3. Children under 12: should only be given this product on medical advice.
  4. Do not exceed the stated dose.
  5. If symptoms haven't improved after 7 days, stop use and see your doctor.
  6. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Don't double up to make up for a missed one.
  7. Leave at least 2 hours between this medicine and tetracyclines, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, iron salts, thyroid hormones, chloroquine, bisphosphonates or estramustine, if you're taking any of these.
  8. Store below 25°C. Don't refrigerate or freeze. Use within 3 months of opening.

Not suitable for: anyone allergic to any of the ingredients, including parahydroxybenzoates (parabens). Each 10ml dose contains around 5.1mmol sodium and 2mmol potassium, so if you're on a sodium or potassium-restricted diet, or have significant kidney or heart disease, check with a doctor or pharmacist before using it regularly or for a prolonged period.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is peppermint-flavoured Acidex Advance safe if peppermint usually triggers my reflux?

The peppermint flavouring in Acidex Advance is a very small, flavouring-level amount, not a therapeutic dose of mint. That said, peppermint is known to relax the muscle that normally keeps stomach acid down, which is why strong mint teas, sweets or mint-heavy foods can worsen reflux in some people. If you know peppermint is a personal trigger, it may be worth choosing the Aniseed flavour of Acidex Advance instead, which has the identical active ingredients without any peppermint content.

2. What's the difference between Acidex Advance and Gaviscon Advance?

Both are alginate-based reflux suppressants that work in a similar raft-forming way, but they're separate branded products with their own formulations. Acidex Advance and Gaviscon Advance aren't the same product, so if you've been using one and are considering switching, it's worth checking with your pharmacist that the new one suits your symptoms and any dietary restrictions, such as sodium intake.

3. Can you buy Acidex Advance over the counter?

Yes, Acidex Advance is available without a prescription. You still need to use it as directed to get the best results, and you should see a doctor if your symptoms get worse or haven't improved within 7 days.

4. What are the possible side effects of Acidex Advance?

Side effects are uncommon. The most frequently reported are diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. A genuine allergic reaction is very rare, but can include difficulty breathing, hives or facial swelling. If any of these occur, stop taking the product and contact your doctor straight away.

5. Can you take Acidex Advance Peppermint while pregnant?

Yes, Acidex Advance can be used during pregnancy and while breastfeeding if clinically needed. Because it works by forming a physical barrier rather than being absorbed systemically, it's considered suitable in these circumstances, though treatment should still be kept as short as reasonably possible. Speak to your doctor or midwife if you have any doubts.

6. Is there a difference between Acidex Advance Aniseed and Peppermint?

No, the two flavours contain exactly the same active ingredients at the same strength and are taken in exactly the same way. The only real difference is the flavouring itself, aniseed in one and peppermint oil in the other, so you can choose whichever you find more palatable, or switch between them without any change in how the medicine works.
