Product Description

Hycosan Night Preservative Free Ointment 5g

Hycosan Night Eye Ointment is a sterile, preservative-free ointment containing vitamin A, designed to protect the surface of the eye and ease dry, irritated eyes overnight. It comes in a 5g tube and is used at bedtime, when your eyes produce very little tear fluid and dry eye symptoms can leave you with a sore, sticky start to the morning.

Because the ointment is thick, it causes a slight blur in vision after you apply it, which is why it is made for use just before sleep rather than during the day. Many people use it at night alongside lubricating eye drops through the day. It is a soft, smooth ointment that blends with the natural tear film, and the preservative-free, phosphate-free formula keeps it gentle enough for regular use.

Key Features:

  • Vitamin A formulation. Contains retinol palmitate, a vitamin A compound that is a natural part of the tear film, so the ointment blends well with your own tears.
  • Up to 6 hours of overnight comfort. The ointment stays on the eye through the night to keep the surface lubricated.
  • Preservative and phosphate free. Designed to be well tolerated, including by sensitive eyes.
  • Around 300 applications per tube. A single 5g tube lasts a long time at one application a night.
  • Sterile for 6 months after opening. Suitable for all ages, with no age restriction.

How Hycosan Night Works

While you sleep, the eye makes very little tear fluid, so a dry eye has almost no moisture to protect it for hours. Hycosan Night fills that gap with a soft ointment base of liquid paraffin, light liquid paraffin, wool fat and white soft paraffin, which spreads across the eye's surface and forms a long-lasting protective film.

Vitamin A, in the form of retinol palmitate, is a natural component of the tear film. Including it helps the ointment mix well with the tears already on your eye and supports good tolerance. The film lets your eyelids glide smoothly over the surface of the eye and eases the burning, dry or tired feeling, and it helps prevent the stuck-shut eyelids and discomfort that some people with dry eye notice on waking.

Ingredients

  • Active ingredient: Retinol palmitate (vitamin A), 250 I.U. per gram
  • Other ingredients: Liquid paraffin, light liquid paraffin, wool fat (lanolin), white soft paraffin
  • Free from: Preservatives, phosphates
  • Note: Wool fat can occasionally cause local skin reactions such as contact dermatitis, so check you have no known sensitivity to it before use.

How to Use

  1. Wash your hands, and stand in front of a mirror if that helps.
  2. Remove the cap. Do not use the tube if the carton seal was broken before first use.
  3. Tilt your head back slightly and gently pull your lower eyelid down with one finger.
  4. Hold the tube upright above the eye and squeeze gently, without folding or rolling the tube, to place a small line of ointment (about 1cm) into the gap between the eye and the lower lid.
  5. Close your eyes slowly and blink. Do not let the tip of the tube touch your eye, eyelid or skin.
  6. Put the cap back on carefully after use.
  7. Usual use is once a day, just before going to bed. In more severe dry eye it is usually used up to 3 times a day, and if you feel you need it more often, speak to your doctor or optician. There is no time limit on treatment.
  8. If you use lubricating eye drops, apply them first and use Hycosan Night about 30 minutes later. If you use another eye ointment, leave at least 1 hour between them.
  9. Do not wear contact lenses while using Hycosan Night. Take lenses out before you apply it.
  10. Store below 25°C, out of the sight and reach of children. Use within 6 months of first opening and never after the expiry date. One tube should only be used by one person.

Do not use Hycosan Night if you:

  • are allergic to any of the ingredients, including wool fat
  • are wearing contact lenses
  • have just had eye surgery or have an acute eye injury, as there are no clinical studies for these situations

If your eyes do not feel better, or feel worse, after a few days, speak to your doctor or pharmacist. If you use it in the daytime, your vision will be blurred for a while, so do not drive, use machinery or work without secure footing until it clears.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do you use Hycosan Night eye ointment?

Pull down your lower eyelid, squeeze a small line of ointment (about 1cm) into the gap between the eye and lid, then close your eyes slowly and blink. Do this just before bed, without letting the tip of the tube touch your eye or skin. Wash your hands first, and take out contact lenses before you apply it.

2. How often can you use Hycosan Night?

Once a day just before bed is the usual use, and up to 3 times a day for more severe dry eye. Overdosing is very unlikely when you follow the instructions, because the eye's surface can only hold a small amount. If you feel you need it more often than 3 times a day, speak to your doctor or optician. There is no limit on how long you can use it.

3. Can you wear contact lenses with Hycosan Night?

No, Hycosan Night should not be used while you are wearing contact lenses. The thick, greasy ointment is not suitable with lenses in, so remove them before applying it. If you wear lenses and need dry eye relief during the day, ask your optician or pharmacist about a lens-compatible option.

4. What are the side effects of Hycosan Night?

Side effects are very rare. The most common thing you will notice is slightly blurred vision after applying it, because of the ointment's thick texture, which is why it is used at bedtime. Very rarely, people have reported red, itchy or burning eyes or excessive tearing, which cleared up after they stopped using it. Wool fat can also cause skin reactions in people who are sensitive to it. Stop using it and speak to your pharmacist or doctor if you have a reaction.

5. Is Hycosan Night an antibiotic, and can it be used for an eye infection?

No, Hycosan Night is a lubricating ointment for dry eye, not an antibiotic or antiviral, and it does not treat infections. It will not replace medicines such as chloramphenicol or aciclovir eye ointments. If your eyes are red, painful, sticky, or producing discharge, or you have a change in your vision, speak to a pharmacist, optician or GP rather than treating it as dry eye.

6. Why does Hycosan Night make my vision blurry, and why is it used at night?

The ointment is thick, so it temporarily blurs your vision after you apply it, which is why it is recommended just before sleep. That thickness is also what keeps the protective film on your eye for up to 6 hours overnight. If you use it in the daytime, wait until your vision is clear before driving, using machinery or working without secure footing.
